Intimacy
Deepening Emotional & Sexual Intimacy
Intimacy is the experience of feeling deeply connected to your partner in mind, body and heart. It develops through everyday moments of affection, warmth, understanding, and care, as well as vulnerable conversations, shared experiences, physical closeness and staying together through challenging situations. At its heart, intimacy is about feeling loved, desired, valued, and uniquely bonded to one another.
You may love each other but feel disconnected. Conversations may revolve around logistics, affection may become less frequent, sexual desire may differ, or physical touch may feel strained or absent. Over time, you may begin to feel more like roommates or co-parents than romantic partners who genuinely enjoy and adore each other.
Understanding Intimacy & Connection
From an attachment perspective, emotional security provides an important foundation for closeness and bonding. We need to know that our partner is accessible, responsive, and emotionally engaged, particularly when we feel vulnerable or need reassurance.
Emotional and sexual intimacy are closely connected, although they don't always develop in the same way or at the same pace. Stress, unresolved conflict, betrayal, parenting, life transitions, differences in desire, and longstanding relationship patterns can interfere with both. Partners may gradually stop sharing their inner worlds, expressing affection, initiating physical closeness, or making time for romance and playfulness.
How I Help
Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) and attachment theory, I help couples understand the patterns that interfere with emotional and sexual connection.
We work on having more open conversations about feelings, needs, affection, desire, and sexuality. I help partners become more emotionally accessible and responsive, address fears or vulnerabilities around intimacy, and find ways to express love and affection that feel meaningful and natural to both people.
What Can Change
As emotional safety and understanding grow, couples can begin to experience greater closeness, affection, and enjoyment of one another. Physical and sexual intimacy may become more comfortable, mutually satisfying, and connected to the emotional bond they share.
The goal is to create a loving relationship in which both partners feel emotionally connected, physically affectionate, sexually fulfilled, and secure in their bond—while maintaining their individuality and continuing to grow together.
