Brink of Divorce
Finding Your Way Through a Difficult Time
Relationships can reach moments when everything feels uncertain. One partner may have given an ultimatum, threatened to leave, asked for a separation, or said they are no longer sure they want to stay married. A major conflict, betrayal, or accumulation of unresolved hurt can leave one or both partners questioning what happens next.
You may still love each other but feel overwhelmed by conflict or distance. You may be sleeping separately, talking about divorce, or struggling to have a conversation without it escalating or shutting down.
Being on the brink of divorce does not necessarily mean your relationship is ending. But this is a relationship crisis that needs your attention and intervention.
Understanding Relationship Crisis
Relationship crises rarely exist in isolation. They often emerge after months or years of disconnection, unresolved conflict, loneliness, resentment, or painful patterns that have become increasingly difficult to change.
Sometimes there is a specific event that brings everything to the surface, such as infidelity, a significant breach of trust, or an hostile and escalated argument. Other times, couples reach a point where the relationship simply no longer feels sustainable in its current form.
When a relationship feels threatened, both partners can become more emotionally reactive. One may push harder for answers, reassurance, or change. The other may withdraw, becomes defensive, or go silent for days. These reactions can create even more fear and distance at a time when both partners are already hurting.
How I Help
Using Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT), I help couples slow down what is happening between them and understand the patterns that are contributing to the crisis.
We work to make sense of what has happened, address the emotions underneath the conflict, and create conversations in which both partners can speak more openly about what they are experiencing, opening the door to create the kind of partnership they want.
When there has been a significant relational injury, including infidelity or betrayal, we can also work toward understanding what happened, addressing its impact, and determining what is needed for trust and connection to begin to heal.
For couples who need more time and support than a traditional therapy session allows, I also offer Couples Intensives. An intensive provides an extended block of time to slow things down, understand what is happening, and focus more deeply on the issues that have brought your relationship to this point.
When You Are Unsure About Staying Married
Sometimes the immediate question is not how to repair the relationship, but whether both partners even want to try to heal the marriage.
If you or your spouse are considering divorce but are not completely sure that is the best path, Discernment Counseling may be more appropriate than traditional couples therapy or an intensive.
Discernment Counseling is designed for couples where one person is “leaning out” of the relationship and the other is “leaning in.” Rather than trying to solve the problems in the marriage, the goal is to gain clarity and confidence about a direction and determine whether the problems in the marriage may be solvable.
What Can Change
In the midst of a relationship crisis, it can be difficult to imagine anything beyond the pain and uncertainty of the present moment. Therapy creates a place to slow things down, understand what has brought you here, and begin making thoughtful decisions about what comes next.
For couples who choose to work on their relationship, this can mean beginning to repair hurt, changing long-standing patterns, and rebuilding emotional safety and connection. For couples who are uncertain about their future, it can mean gaining greater clarity about the relationship and the path forward.
Taking the Next Step
If your relationship is in crisis, you do not need to have everything figured out before reaching out. I invite you to schedule a consultation so you can tell me a little about what is happening and we can determine whether working together is the right step for you.
